What your teen girl wants more than anything is connection, to be known and valued. I remember wanting so badly to be connected with the girls in my school. Oh, they liked me well enough, but they had hid large parts of their lives from me because I was more like the mom of the group. I clearly remember one Saturday night when a few friends told me they were going home and dropped me off at my house early. I found out later they all went to a party. I was not invited and quite frankly probably wouldn’t have gone anyway. My biggest fear came true when the connection I thought was real snapped, and they didn’t want me tagging along. What my 16-year-old heart longed for was trust and reciprocity, in that instance I realized they were missing.
